Informal lunchtime recital by Stefan Donner on Oxford Town Hall's historic Father Willis organ.
Stefan Donner plays the organ at Oxford Town Hall on Wednesday 28 October, starting at 12.00pm. It's a lunchtime recital in the Main Hall, so it's one of those mid-week things you can slip into and out of without rearranging your whole day.
The instrument is the Father Willis Organ, one of Oxford's best-known historic concert organs. It was built in the late 19th century by Henry Willis, a celebrated English organ builder, and it's stayed remarkably close to its original form ever since. The only real change came in 1926, when the original water-powered mechanism was replaced by an electric blower. It's still very much the same instrument Willis put together over a century ago, and it's housed right in the Main Hall, so you're sitting in the same room as the pipes.
The whole thing is set up as an informal lunchtime affair. You're welcome to bring a packed lunch, and tea and coffee are provided, so it's as much about having a bit of a break as it is about the music. It's a good way to hear the character and the distinctive sound of the organ without needing to make a whole evening of it.
