Sunday morning coffee concert with the Opus13 String Quartet playing Beethoven and Grieg in the historic Holywell Music Room.
Opus13 String Quartet play at the Holywell Music Room on Sunday 18 October, part of the Oxford Coffee Concerts series. It's a morning chamber music set, and the programme brings together two contrasting quartets: Beethoven's String Quartet no 3 in D major, op 18 no 3 and Grieg's String Quartet no 1 in G minor, op 27.
If you're not familiar with the Coffee Concerts, they've been a Sunday morning fixture in the city since 1986, with a new ensemble taking the stage every week. The format is deliberately low-key: an hour of chamber music to start the day, and coffee at a local pub for those who turn up early. It's a slow way to spend a Sunday morning, and the age guidance is 5+.
The venue is the Holywell Music Room on Holywell Road, one of the oldest purpose-built concert halls in Europe. Built in 1748, it's often called the first dedicated music venue in England, and it's been hosting performances for more than two centuries, with historical ties to composers like Haydn. It's a small, intimate space that suits this kind of music.
