Screening of Mamoru Oshii's cyberpunk anime 'Ghost in the Shell' on its original English-dubbed 35mm print.
PictureHouse Cinemas in Oxford is screening Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell on Tuesday 9 November, as part of the NFF programme. It's the 1995 anime, based on Masamune Shirow's cyberpunk manga, and it's running on a 35mm print from the film's original international release, so it's the English-dubbed version rather than the original Japanese. The whole thing runs for 100 minutes.
Set in 2029, the story follows Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cybernetic government agent working for Section 9. They're hunting the Puppet Master, a hacker capable of infiltrating human minds, and the chase pulls her into questions about consciousness, identity, and what it actually means to be human. It's a slow-burn piece of sci-fi that spends as much time on the rain-slicked cityscapes and the philosophy as it does on the action.

Oshii's hand-drawn animation and the way he handles those big ideas have left a mark on decades of science-fiction cinema since it came out, and seeing it on 35mm gives it a different weight than a digital stream. It's certified 15, and it runs for 100 minutes.
