Monthly over-18s night of indie rock classics, from Arctic Monkeys and Blur to The Libertines and The Smiths, at the O2 Academy Oxford.
Indie Fridays returns to O2 Academy Oxford on Friday 23 October, the monthly club night that bills itself as the biggest indie night in the city. It's a DJ-led night rather than a live bill, spinning indie rock classics across a wide range of acts, and the organisers describe it as 'Indie Rock n Roll' for everyone.
The playlist covers a lot of ground. You'll hear the 90s and early 2000s staples like Oasis, Pulp, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, The Libertines, The Strokes, The Kooks, The Killers, The White Stripes, The Cribs, The Wombats, The Vaccines, Two Door Cinema Club, and The 1975. It reaches further back to The Clash and Nirvana, and brings in more recent names like Sam Fender, Blossoms, Circa Waves, Catfish & The Bottlemen, and Foals. Biffy Clyro, The Black Keys, Gorillaz, Jamie T, Kasabian, The Streets, and Red Hot Chilli Peppers are in the mix too, so it's a broad sweep of the genre rather than sticking to one particular era.
The night runs at the O2 Academy, an Edwardian building on Cowley Road that's hosted live music for decades. Long before it was a venue, it served as a Cooperative party hall, and it traded as The Venue and then the well-respected Zodiac before launching as O2 Academy Oxford in September 2007 with New Young Pony Club, The Magic Numbers and Young Knives. Notable past gigs there include Ed Sheeran, Foals, Stereophonics, Ozzy Osbourne, Babyshambles, Hozier and Royal Blood.
