Free hands-on afternoon led by volunteers to explore the History of Science Museum's collections and see its objects in action, with Light and Space backpacks.
How Does It Work is back at the History of Science Museum on Sunday 31 January, part of the museum's family-friendly programme. It's an afternoon session where you get to go hands-on with the collections and see the museum's objects in action, rather than just looking at them behind glass. The sessions are led by volunteers and are recommended for ages 7 and up, so it works for adults and families with older children.
If you're planning to spend a bit more time there, there's more to do around the galleries. The museum has Light and Space backpacks available, which are inclusive, SEND-friendly packs with hands-on activities to use in every gallery. There are also family scavenger hunt trails, like 'Spot the Animal' and 'Mission: Morse Code', to keep younger ones occupied while you're exploring.

The museum itself is the world's oldest public museum building, and it houses scientific instruments, collections and interactive displays that span centuries of discovery. It's on Broad Street in the city centre, and entry is free. One practical thing to keep in mind: the lift isn't suitable for pushchairs, so you'll want to plan accordingly if you're bringing a pram. The session runs from 12:00 to 16:00.
