Free drop-in creative workshop for all ages to make musical instruments from everyday objects, inspired by Appau Jnr Boakye-Yiadom's exhibition 'Modular Merger'.
Modern Art Oxford is running a family-friendly creative workshop on Thursday 29 October, and it's free. It's part of Appau Jnr Boakye-Yiadom's exhibition Modular Merger, so the session fits right into the show rather than sitting off to the side.
The whole thing is about the connection between sound and image. You start by layering painted and collaged images, then move on to experimenting with everyday objects and sensory materials to hear the sounds they make. From there, you build your own musical instrument out of boxes, tins, elastic bands and paper straws. Once it's finished, your instrument gets added to the gallery's growing collection, so it stays behind as part of the exhibition rather than going home with you.
It's open to all ages, and it runs as a flexible drop-in, so there's no need to book ahead. The session goes from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, with two distinct windows to pop in: 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Children need to be accompanied by an adult. If you're visiting with kids, the welcome desk also has free activity sheets and sensory backpacks available. The indoor space is accessible for wheelchair users and visitors using mobility aids.
