Filmed version of the musical Hadestown, with the original Broadway cast, screened at Vue Oxford.
Hadestown comes to Vue Oxford Ozone Leisure on Tuesday 20 October, a filmed version of the musical as it played at the Lyric Theatre in London. It's a recording of the live stage show rather than a film made for the screen, so you're seeing the production as it was performed in front of an audience.
The story is a retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, woven together with the relationship between Hades and Persephone. Eurydice, struggling with poverty, is lured to the industrial underworld of Hadestown by Hades; Orpheus, a struggling musician, ventures down to bring her back. It's a tragedy about love and loss, and the recording captures the full production from start to finish.
What makes this particular version stand out is the cast. It features five of the original Broadway performers: Reeve Carney as Orpheus, Eva Noblezada as Eurydice, AndrΓ© De Shields as Hermes, Patrick Page as Hades, and Amber Gray as Persephone. Having the original Broadway core back together on the London stage gives it a continuity that's hard to find elsewhere. The whole thing was directed by Brett Sullivan.
