Film of the musical filmed live at the Lyric Theatre in London, with original Broadway cast members, at Vue Oxford.
Hadestown: The Musical comes to Vue Oxford on Thursday 22 October, a filmed version of the production that ran at the Lyric Theatre in London. It's a recording of the show performed live on stage, so you get the full theatrical experience on the big screen rather than a movie reimagining it.
The story is a retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, set in a world where the underworld is an industrial town called Hadestown. Eurydice, struggling with poverty, is lured there by Hades, the town's boss, while Orpheus, a musician, ventures down to bring her back. Woven into that is the relationship between Hades and his wife, Persephone, so there are two love stories running side by side. It's a tragedy, as the original myth is, but told with a folk-inflected sound.
What makes this particular recording worth noting is the cast. Five original Broadway performers return for it: Reeve Carney as Orpheus, Eva Noblezada as Eurydice, AndrΓ© De Shields as Hermes, Patrick Page as Hades, and Amber Gray as Persephone. If you've followed the show since its New York run, those are the voices you'll recognise. The whole thing was directed by Brett Sullivan, who captured the live performance at the Lyric.

It's a long one, running 141 minutes, so it's a proper evening out rather than a quick trip to the cinema. The screening starts at 19:30 at Vue Oxford on Thursday 22 October.
