Screening of the documentary 'Ghost In the Machine' followed by a Q&A with its director, Valerie Veatch.
Ghost In the Machine is coming to The Ultimate Picture Palace on Tuesday 20 October, with a screening followed by a Q&A with the film's director, Valerie Veatch. It's presented by IF Oxford, and the whole thing runs for about two hours and fifteen minutes, starting at 6:00 pm.
Ghost In the Machine is an investigative documentary that looks at the history of artificial intelligence from a different angle: it traces AI's origins back to power rather than technology. It follows how personal computing, semiconductors, statistics and AI grew up entangled with control, domination and scientific racism, and digs into the philosophical, cultural and political forces behind today's AI boom. Along the way, it draws on testimony from more than 30 experts to expose the human labour and economic exploitation that AI development depends on, as well as the fantasies and politics behind Silicon Valley's unchecked growth.
The evening is set up so you get the film first, and then the Q&A with Valerie Veatch, which gives you a chance to hear from the person who put it together. It's recommended for teenagers and adults, with under-16s to be accompanied by a responsible adult.
