Weekly swing dance night with Lindy Hop, Charleston and social dancing by Oxford Lindy Hoppers, for all levels.
Fire Station Swing is back at The Old Fire Station on Thursday nights, running from 24 September to 26 November 2026. It's the main teaching night for the Oxford Lindy Hoppers, and the whole thing is built around Lindy Hop — the partner dance that grew out of the swing music of the 1920s, 30s and 40s. Along with Lindy Hop, the classes cover Charleston and other authentic jazz dances that started in African American communities during the Swing Era and eventually became a global phenomenon. The night is run in ten-week blocks, so if you're starting now, you've got a full term to get your feet under you.
One of the best things about it is that it's open to everyone, regardless of where you're starting from. There's a Fundamentals class for those with no previous dance experience, and an Experienced class for regular social dancers. In between the two, there's guided practice and social dancing, and the whole session closes with social dancing to a DJ. It's a role-based rather than gender-based dance, and partners rotate throughout the classes, so you don't need to bring one along. Drop-ins are welcome, and everyone follows the organisation's Safer Spaces Policy.
