One-off cinema screening of the English National Ballet's filmed version of Kenneth MacMillan's ballet The Sleeping Beauty.
The Ultimate Picture Palace is showing English National Ballet's The Sleeping Beauty on Sunday 18 October, a one-off cinema screening of the company's production. It's Sir Kenneth MacMillan's take on the fairytale ballet, which the company filmed live at London's Royal Albert Hall and is now bringing to the big screen here in Oxford.
If you're not familiar with the story, it's the one most of us know: Princess Aurora is cursed by the wicked Carabosse to die on her sixteenth birthday, until her godmother, the Lilac Fairy, softens the spell so that she sleeps for a hundred years instead, only to be woken by true love's kiss. It's a classic for a reason, and seeing it on a cinema screen gives you a closer look at the dancing than you'd get from the back of a theatre.
The screening runs for 160 minutes in total, which includes a ten-minute interval to stretch your legs. It's rated BBFC-U, so it's suitable for all ages — a good one to bring the whole family along to if you're fancying a Sunday afternoon at the cinema. The film itself was captured live at the Royal Albert Hall, so you're seeing the English National Ballet's full-scale production rather than a studio version.
