Screening of the New Zealand coming-of-age drama 'Big Girls Don't Cry' followed by a Q&A with director Paloma Schneideman and actor Noah Taylor.
Phoenix Picturehouse is screening Big Girls Don't Cry on Monday 9 November, with a Q&A to follow. It's part of Cinecity 2026, and the whole thing runs for 100 minutes.
Big Girls Don't Cry is a queer coming-of-age drama set in a New Zealand town during the summer of 2006. It follows 14-year-old Sid Bookman, who spends her summer arguing with her father and sister, trying to hang out with the cool gang, falling out with her best friend, and navigating the predatory attentions of young men, all while secretly attracted to a young woman at school. Ani Palmer takes the lead in her first screen role, and Noah Taylor plays her shambolic father.
There's a bit of a story behind the film too. It's the debut feature from director Paloma Schneideman, and the first produced feature from A Wave in the Ocean, a filmmaking course led by Jane Campion. Sheri Linden of The Hollywood Reporter described it as a story that "pulses with a powerful sense of place and terrifically charged scenes of chaotic intimacy."
