Informal film discussion club led by film writer James Clarke on the work of Guillermo del Toro, marking the 20th anniversary of 'Pan's Labyrinth'.
Phoenix Picturehouse is hosting a session of Cine Chat, its new series of informal film discussion clubs, on Saturday 31 October. This one focuses on Guillermo del Toro, and it's led by film writer James Clarke, who hosts every session in the series. The starting point is the 20th anniversary of Pan's Labyrinth, and from there the discussion works its way through a selection of del Toro's filmography.
Clarke's talk will centre on The Devil's Backbone, Pan's Labyrinth, and Frankenstein. It's a good spread across del Toro's career: The Devil's Backbone is the Spanish-language ghost story from 2001; Pan's Labyrinth is the 2006 dark fairy tale that's now hitting its two-decade mark; and Frankenstein is the project he's spent years developing. The session is built around those three, so it's a chance to see how they connect rather than just a run-through of his hits.
Cine Chat is a new thing at the Phoenix, with each session focusing on a different theme, director, or actor. This one is all about del Toro, and like the others, it's led by Clarke. The cinema itself is a century-old Oxford spot with two screens and a friendly upstairs bar, and it's also home to the team-curated Phoenix Nights cult classics series and a Picturehouse and UNICEF Kids' Club that brings families together through cinema.
