Screening of 'Sad Girlz', the debut feature by Mexican filmmaker Fernanda Tovar that won the Generation 14+ Award at the Berlinale.
Sad Girlz is screening at Phoenix Picturehouse on Friday 30 October, part of the Cinefest Film programme. It's the debut feature from Mexican filmmaker Fernanda Tovar, and it's already picked up the Generation 14+ Award at the Berlinale, so it's arriving here with a bit of a reputation.
The story follows Paula and La Maestra, two sixteen-year-old best friends who also happen to be rivals on the same swimming team. Their friendship is put to the test when Paula is raped at a party, and La Maestra sets out to avenge her. It's a heavy premise, and the title points to the kind of territory it covers—the friendship between two girls pushed to a breaking point by something violent and life-altering.
It's a debut feature, so this is Tovar's first full-length film, and the Berlinale award suggests it's hit the mark. If you've been following the festival circuit this year, this is one of the titles that's been making its way across screens, and it's finally landing in Oxford.

As for the venue, Phoenix Picturehouse is a century-old cinema with two screens and a friendly upstairs bar, so it's a good spot to linger before or after. They also run a Kids' Club in partnership with UNICEF, bringing families together through a love of cinema, which gives you a sense of the kind of place it is. The screening is part of Cinefest Film, so it's one of several titles showing as part of that programme. The film runs for 90 minutes.
