Screening of the documentary 'My Father and Qaddafi' at Phoenix Picturehouse, with showtimes from 27 October.
My Father and Qaddafi is screening at Phoenix Picturehouse on Thursday 29 October, as part of the cinema's ongoing film programme. It's a documentary that starts with a family disappearance and ends up tracing the political history of a country, and it's the kind of thing that stays with you long after the credits roll.
The film follows Jihan Kikhia, the daughter of Mansur Rashid Kikhia. Her father was Libya's Foreign Minister under Muammar Qaddafi, but he later became an opposition leader in exile, at one point considered a potential future leader for the country. When Jihan was six, in 1993, he travelled to Cairo for a conference and never came back. The film is her attempt to retrace that disappearance, and she does it with her camera, mixing personal and state archives with her own family's experiences. It's as much about a daughter looking for her father as it is about the regime that stood between them.

It's playing at Phoenix Picturehouse, the century-old Oxford cinema with two screens and a friendly upstairs bar. If you're not already familiar, it's also the home of a 'Kids' Club' run with UNICEF that brings families together through cinema, so it's a place that does as much for the local community as it does for the films it screens. The film itself had its release on 22 October, and showtimes are running from Tuesday 27 October right through to Monday 14 December, so if you can't make the 29th, there are plenty of other dates to choose from. You can find the full schedule and book your tickets on the Picturehouses website.
