Screening of the documentary 'Artists in Residence' by Katie Jacobs, winner of the DOC NYC Grand Jury Prize, within the Cambridge Film Festival programme at Phoenix Picturehouse.
Artists in Residence is screening at Phoenix Picturehouse on Thursday 29 October, as part of the Cambridge Film Festival. It's a documentary directed by Katie Jacobs, running 93 minutes, and it takes its name from the New York art scene and the women who helped shape it back in the 1950s.
The film started when Jacobs moved into a building on 30 East 2nd Street in 2017. There, she met three women who became the anchors of the story; all still in their nineties, they recount the stories of their youth and the messy beauty of cohabiting as women, mothers and artists. Together they build a collective portrait that works as an aspirational tale of togetherness, with the women's own voices carrying the weight of the narrative. It's a look at a specific time and place — mid-century New York — told by the people who were actually there.
On the awards front, Artists in Residence took home the DOC NYC Grand Jury Prize. The screening is presented by the Cambridge Film Trust, a registered charity that works to widen access to cinema and supports emerging talent through film, education and community programmes. It's one of the titles coming to Oxford as part of the Cambridge Film Festival, which brings a selection of films from the festival's programme to cinemas across the region.
