Karaoke night at the Phoenix Picturehouse where you sing to the big screen, with compère B*tchtrice, an open bar and a free drink with every ticket.
Big Screen Karaoke is back at Phoenix Picturehouse on Thursday 29 October, and it's one of many dates running from Tuesday 27 October through to Monday 14 December, so if that particular night doesn't suit, there are plenty of other slots to pick from.
The premise is exactly what it says on the tin: the cinema becomes a karaoke venue. You pick your song, the lyrics come up on the big screen, and your vocals go through the cinema's sound system. It's a bit different from the usual pub setup, with the lyrics projected in front of everyone rather than on a small monitor tucked away in a corner.
Running the night is the in-house compère B*tchtrice, who fronts the whole thing. The bar stays open throughout, and every ticket includes a free drink, so you've got something to hold onto while you're waiting for your turn.

It's all happening at Phoenix Picturehouse on Walton Street, a cinema with a fair bit of history behind it. The building, the North Oxford Kinema, first opened in 1913, designed by local architect Gilbert T Gardner for proprietors Richard Henry John Bartlett, W Beeson and Charles Green. It was renamed the Scala in 1920 and grew into one of the most important art-house cinemas in the UK outside London. In 1970, the single auditorium was split into two screens, Studios One and Two, and after a change of ownership in 1977 it became the Phoenix. It was the first of the Picturehouse family in 1989, with a bar added in the 1990s. That bar is still there, and it's part of the deal for this one.
