Concert by soprano Anna Prohaska and pianist Eric Schneider with wartime songs, part of the Oxford International Song Festival.
Anna Prohaska is playing the Holywell Music Room on Monday 19 October, joined by pianist Eric Schneider. It's her first time appearing at the Oxford International Song Festival, and the two are performing a programme they've recorded for Deutsche Grammophon.
The whole thing is built around wartime texts, and the range of composers they pull from is wide: Michael Cavendish in the 16th century, Beethoven, Poulenc, Weill, and Wolfgang Rihm in the 20th. It's a long stretch of history to cover in one evening, and the programme is described as being set in the past but speaking to the present. The common thread is love in its many forms—the highs, the lows, and the complications that come with it—told through song.
Prohaska is a soprano known for singing across a broad range of styles, and this is her first appearance at the festival. Schneider is an established pianist, and together they're bringing this recorded programme to the stage. The concert is part of the Oxford International Song Festival, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. It sits at the heart of Oxford Lieder's wider programme, which includes more than 50 concerts and dozens of other events, with the annual Schubert Weekend as one of the main fixtures.
