Halloween screening of Tim Burton's Beetlejuice (1988) in the historic Divinity School of the Bodleian Library, with over-ear headphones, drinks and snacks.
Beetlejuice is screening at The Divinity School on Friday 30 October, part of a Halloween run that continues on Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November. It's the 1988 original, 92 minutes long and rated 12A, so it works as a family outing as much as a night out with friends. The story follows the spirits of a deceased couple who find themselves harassed by an unbearable new family moving into their home, and in a desperate bid to get them out, they hire a malicious spirit to do the job. It stars Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis and Michael Keaton.
The setting is a big part of the draw here. The screening fills the Divinity School, one of the Bodleian Library's most celebrated spaces, right inside its world-famous gothic architecture. It's a special event for families and adults alike, and tickets are limited. To keep the sound quality up in such a large room, everyone gets over-ear headphones, and there are drinks and snacks available to buy inside, so you can settle in for the full 92 minutes without having to leave your seat.
If you're around on the same day, there's more to do at the Bodleian. After Hours tours of Duke Humfrey's Library run alongside the screenings, and there are Children's Literature tours as well, so you could easily make a whole evening of it. The Divinity School is in the Old Bodleian Library on Broad Street, OX1 3BG.
