Free AfroFusion dance session celebrating the Windrush generation, part of The Island programme at The Island.
African Dance takes over The Island on Saturday 24 October, from 12 noon to 5.00pm. The main draw is AfroFusion dance, but that's only one part of the afternoon: there's storytelling, a fashion show, African market stalls, food, music and dance all running together. It's a full day out rather than a single performance, so you can drift between the dancing, the food and the stalls.
The session is part of a wider programme called The Island, which runs from 7 to 31 October at 14 Park End Street. It's a collaboration between Fusion Arts, the African Caribbean Kultural Heritage Initiative (ACKHI), Oxfordshire Community Education Group (OCEG), Unlock the Chains Collective and the A Place for We Project, which brings together Oxford Brookes and the Oxfordshire African Caribbean Community Archive. The whole thing celebrates the resilience and creativity of the Windrush generation and their contributions to the Oxford community.
If you're around during the rest of the programme, there are a couple of exhibitions worth seeing. The Carib Bean Living Room is a reconstruction of a typical 1960s West Indian front room in the UK, curated by ACKHI. Beside it is New Beacon Books, a look at the UK's first Caribbean publishing house and Black bookshop, which opened in 1966. The full programme pulls together exhibitions, talks, music, workshops and performances, all leading up to a Carnival Party with calypso, soca and reggae.
