Screening of the documentary 'Across Land, Across Sea' about North Korean refugees, followed by a discussion with director Hark-Joon Lee, within the 'K-FLOW' day of K-culture.
Across Land, Across Sea screens at the Schwarzman Centre Cinema on Saturday 6 February, with the film followed by a discussion with its director, Hark-Joon Lee. It's a documentary about two North Korean refugees, Songgok and Sueryun, and the screening is presented by the Schwarzman Centre, the Oxford Centre for Korean Studies and EIDF.
The film is part of K-FLOW / Riding the Korean Wave, a day of K-culture at the Schwarzman Centre. The wider programme was curated by Professor Jieun Kiaer, Hark-Joon Lee and Professor Kim Hyungsuk, who's known as the 'Godfather of K-Pop'. Across the day, the organisers invite you to dance like a K-pop star, discover the origins of the Korean Wave — or hallyu — and explore life on both sides of the Korean peninsula through a film programme. The day is supported by Samchully Co., Ltd. and the Korea Foundation.
Across Land, Across Sea sits at the more personal end of that programme, focusing on the lived experience of two people who've left North Korea. Having the director there for a discussion afterwards means you can ask about the making of the film and the stories it tells, rather than just watching it and heading home. If you're already planning to spend the day with the rest of the K-FLOW programme, this is the part that turns the focus from the global pop phenomenon to the people behind the border.
