A critically acclaimed theatre production adapted and directed by Emma Rice, blending myth, music, movement and storytelling in a unique adaptation of the medieval Celtic legend.
Tristan & Yseult comes to Nottingham Playhouse from Tuesday 9 to Saturday 13 February 2027, as part of a wider tour that stops in Edinburgh, New York, Cambridge, Plymouth, London and York. It's adapted and directed by Emma Rice, with Carl Grose and Anna Maria Murphy on the writing, Stu Barker providing the music, and Bill Mitchell and Vicki Mortimer handling set and costume design. Etta Murfitt takes care of choreography and intimacy coordination.
This version draws from a medieval Celtic telling of the legend rather than Wagner's Tristan and Isolde. It blends myth, music, movement and storytelling, and it's billed as having no opera and no coats of armour. It's aimed at adults and brave children aged eight and up.
The production has a long history behind it. It first opened in 2003 as a Kneehigh production, playing outdoors at Restormel Castle in Cornwall and Rufford Abbey in Nottinghamshire, then at the Minack Theatre in 2004, before being reimagined as an indoor show at the National Theatre's Cottesloe in 2005. It was last seen on stage in 2017, so this is its first return to the UK in ten years. It's been described as one of the most influential productions of the 21st century.
