Chelsea Walker's staging of Shakespeare's tragedy of forbidden love, a co-production of Nottingham Playhouse, English Touring Theatre, Leeds Playhouse and The Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh.
Romeo & Juliet runs at Nottingham Playhouse from Tuesday 20 April to Saturday 8 May 2027. It's a co-production between four companies — Nottingham Playhouse, English Touring Theatre, Leeds Playhouse and The Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh — so it's a shared effort rather than a single house production.
Chelsea Walker directs, and she's worked with English Touring Theatre before, staging Rose Lewenstein's Cougar in 2019 and Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire in 2018. The production is billed as Shakespeare's explosive, urgent tale of forbidden love, secrets, loyalty and grief, where one wrong decision can change everything. It leans on some of the play's most famous lines, like "Then I defy you, stars!" and "These violent delights have violent ends," and it contains scenes of intimacy and violence. Nottingham Playhouse artistic director Adam Penford describes it as one of Shakespeare's most performed plays, timeless and universal, with themes that speak to young people and older generations alike.
The show is open to audiences aged 12 and up, and there's a range of accessible performances to choose from: a Chilled Performance, an Audio Described show with a preceding Touch Tour for blind and partially sighted visitors, a BSL interpreted performance and a Captioned show.
