Illustrated talk by architecture historian Lucy Brouwer on the Art Deco pubs of Nottingham from the inter-war years, part of her 'Talks in the Pub' series.
Lucy Brouwer is taking her Talks in the Pub series to The Vat & Fiddle on Monday 19 October, with this one focusing on Nottingham's Art Deco pubs from the inter-war years. It's an illustrated talk, so you'll be seeing the buildings she's talking about rather than just hearing about them. Brouwer is an architecture historian and tour guide, and she's the one behind The Watson Fothergill Walk.
The talk looks at the Art Deco pubs across Nottingham and its surrounding suburbs, and it puts names to the local architects who designed them in the 1920s and 1930s — WB Starr & Hall, AE Eberlin and TC Howitt are among them. The pubs themselves get a good run-through too: The Grove (which is now The Vat & Fiddle), The Vale, The Wolds and The Test Match Hotel are some of the ones she covers. Beyond the buildings, she looks at the 'Improved Pub' concept and the trends in pub design that shaped the inter-war years, as well as the people who ran them and what the original interiors were like.
It's an entertaining, illustrated session with a short intermission and time for questions at the end. The venue itself fits the theme: The Vat & Fiddle is an Art Deco pub run by Castle Rock brewery, a short walk from Nottingham Railway Station. If you're already into this side of the city, Brouwer also runs Watson Fothergill Walk: Architecture of Victorian Nottingham, Deco in the Details and The Carrington Crawl.
