Live gig by Bristol five-piece Holy Youth Movement, mixing rock n' roll and electronica, at The Old Cold Store.
Holy Youth Movement play The Old Cold Store on Friday 30 October, starting at 19:30. They're a five-piece from Bristol, and the sound they've built sits somewhere between rock n' roll and electronica. It's driven by dance-floor rhythms and heavy bass, with a wall of synthesizers and guitars topped with soaring, anthemic vocals. If that sounds like a bit of a contradiction, it's because it is — they're pulling from two very different worlds and running them together.
That mix comes through in the names they cite as influences. On the rock side, there's Primal Scream, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Stooges; on the electronic side, The Chemical Brothers and Underworld. It's a broad spread, but it explains where the dance-floor energy and the guitar noise meet. They've worked with Jagz Kooner, who produced their songs and called them one of the best live bands he'd ever seen, describing the music as 'Electronic Rock n Roll'.

They've put out four songs and a debut EP so far, and they've spent a fair bit of time on the road. They supported Primal Scream on their Maximum Rock n' Roll tour and have played festivals including Glastonbury, Truck Fest and Beautiful Days. This is a headlining slot at The Old Cold Store on Queen's Bridge Road, NG2 1NB, so it's a chance to catch them as a full band rather than as a support act. The set starts at 19:30 on Friday 30 October.
