POetry book club session with a talk on Martín Espada's collection 'Jailbreak of Sparrows' followed by a writing workshop, hosted by Ioney Smallhorne.
The GOBS Poetry Book Club is back at Nottingham Central Library on Saturday 21 November, and this time they're working through Jailbreak of Sparrows by Martín Espada. The session runs from 11:00 to 13:00 in Meeting Room 2, hosted by Ioney Smallhorne.
If you haven't come across the club before, it's run by the GOBS Collective and brings together poets, writers, readers, performers and artists to meet over a cuppa and talk through the month's chosen collection. Each session is split into two halves: the first is a conversation about the book, and the second is a practical writing session with focused exercises inspired by the poems. It's as much about talking through the work as it is about getting your own pen moving, so you don't need to be a writer to join in.
Espada's Jailbreak of Sparrows is the focus for November. It's described as a powerful collection celebrating resilience, justice, love and the lives of ordinary people, combining lyrical storytelling with political insight. The first half of the morning will be spent talking through those themes, and the second half will turn them into writing prompts. If you've been reading it on your own, it's a good chance to hear what other people make of it; if you haven't started yet, it's a fine place to dive in.
