Free symposium with a panel of guest speakers and a Q&A to accompany Quilla Constance's exhibition 'Activating Intersections' at New Art Exchange.
New Art Exchange is hosting a symposium for Activating Intersections on Thursday 3 December, from 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm. It's a companion to Quilla Constance's exhibition of the same name, which is running at the gallery. The symposium brings together a panel of guest speakers to talk through the themes Constance is working with in the show.
That panel is chaired by NAE curator David Sinclair, with Dr Alexandra Kokoli, Dr Ope Lori, Dr Mo Throp, curator Adelaide Bannerman and the artist herself, Quilla Constance. They'll be talking about how hybrid, intersectional and mixed-heritage black and othered identities navigate and are rendered visible within hegemonic frameworks of power. It's a broad, heavy-lifting conversation, and the whole thing opens up with a Q&A afterwards, so there's room to ask your own questions rather than just listening to the panel.
If you haven't seen the exhibition yet, it's a good place to start. Constance is a British artist born in 1980, and the work on display is interdisciplinary. There's Barbados Bonanza (2023, oil on canvas), Sista Signifier (2023, oils on canvas plus performance), The Grenadiaries (2023, a mixed-media costume installation) and Fire Boy (2023, painting-performance). The symposium takes the ideas running through those pieces and puts them into conversation with the rest of the panel.
