Free artist talk and tour of Quilla Constance's solo exhibition 'Activating Intersections' at New Art Exchange.
Quilla Constance is hosting a talk and a tour of her solo exhibition, Activating Intersections, at New Art Exchange on Tuesday 3 November. It runs from 1:30 pm to 3 pm, so it's a lunchtime thing rather than an evening one.
Constance, who also goes by QC, is a British-Jamaican interdisciplinary artist, and Activating Intersections is billed as her most ambitious presentation to date. The exhibition features The Grenadiers: New regiment 2026, eight large-scale oil paintings, and a series of video works. The paintings use realism, surrealism and abstraction to place black female subjects inside the opulent interiors of Buckingham Palace and other stately homes, where objects and logos merge and clash with the surroundings to create unusual, humorous and empowering imagery as a form of social activism.
Her wider practice pulls from anarcho-punk feminism, carnivalesque play and absurdist humour, and works across socially engaged performance, large-scale oil painting, costume and video. That range has taken her work into institutional galleries, onto public streets and onto mainstream television. The talk and tour give you a chance to hear her talk through the work in person and walk through the exhibition with her, rather than just seeing it on your own.
