Stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's bestseller about two women who become allies against war and the Taliban in 1992 Afghanistan.
A Thousand Splendid Suns comes to Nottingham Playhouse from Monday 5 to Saturday 10 April 2027, with most shows starting at 7.30pm and a 2.30pm matinee on Thursday 8 April. It's a stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's international best-seller, the spiritual sequel to The Kite Runner, which has sold more than 38 million copies worldwide. The play is directed by Kimberley Sykes and adapted for the stage by Ursula Rani Sarma.
Set in 1992 in an Afghanistan ravaged by war, it follows Laila, an orphaned girl taken as her neighbour Rasheed's second wife, and his first wife Mariam, who has little choice but to accept her younger, now pregnant rival. As the Taliban take over, the two women become unlikely allies in a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear. Rina Fatania reprises the role of Mariam, and Humera Syed is also in the cast. The production was originally co-produced by Birmingham Rep, Nottingham Playhouse and Leeds Playhouse in 2025, where it played to packed houses, and now returns on a national tour. Director Kimberley Sykes says the play feels more urgent than ever, with women's rights in Afghanistan at a crisis point.
