Tribute revue in which Cheryl Knight recreates the setting of one of Joyce Grenfell's stage shows with her best-known songs and monologues.
Ode to Joyce comes to the Norwich Theatre Playhouse on Saturday 6 February 2027, a tribute revue to Joyce Grenfell, one of the twentieth century's most loved female entertainers. She made her name with hilarious, beautifully observed monologues and songs, and worked across film, television and radio. Her influence reached far beyond her own era, too: Victoria Wood cited her as a great influence, and she's a touchstone for generations of female comedians, Miranda Hart among them.
The show was first put together for Grenfell's centenary year and played to sell-out audiences at the Edinburgh Festival, and it's been touring ever since. It recreates the setting of one of Joyce's own stage shows, with Cheryl Knight at the helm. Knight weaves together her best-known songs and monologues with more delicate, poignant pieces, and adds in some rare, exclusive material that doesn't usually make the cut.
Everything Theatre says Knight "absolutely captures her spirit", and the Daily Telegraph called it "a wonderful show". It's a good way to get a proper sense of what Grenfell did, with the funny character sketches and the quieter moments sitting side by side.
