Historian Mary Beard returns to the stage to explore the secret histories of Ancient Rome and connect them to the modern world.
Mary Beard returns to the stage at Norwich Theatre Royal on Sunday 1 November, her first time back in the spotlight since her sold-out 2025 tour. It's a live event rather than a lecture, and the focus is on the secret histories of Ancient Rome.
Beard is taking the audience beyond the well-worn paths of emperors and battles, the usual suspects that dominate most Roman history. Instead, she's looking at the rich and complex lives of the people who usually get left out of the history books. Along the way, she draws connections between Roman politics and the modern world, so it's as much about the present as it is about the distant past.
One of the things that sets this apart from a standard talk is that it's designed as a conversation. Beard invites the audience to ask their own questions as she unpacks the history, so you're not just listening — you get to push back and dig deeper into the things that interest you. It's recommended for ages 12 and over, which makes it a decent one to bring a teenager along to if they've got a thing for the classics.
