Screening of the 2011 film 'Rare Exports' at the Norwich Arts Centre on Monday 21 December.
Norwich Arts Centre is screening Rare Exports on Monday 21 December, as part of their Dark Christmas series. It's a Finnish film from 2011, running 82 minutes, and it's rated 15+, so it's not one for the little ones. The whole thing is set in a gothic church, with the film shown by candlelight, which fits the mood of the story well enough.
On the eve of Christmas, a young boy sets out to discover the truth behind the strange goings-on in his small, isolated village. He finds the reindeer have been slaughtered, the hairdryers and radiators have vanished, and the children have gone. The film's tagline sums it up: 'Seal the chimney. Lock the doors. Hide your children. This year the real Santa Claus is coming to town.' It's a Christmas tale that takes the figure of Father Christmas and turns it into something far more unsettling than the version we're used to.
