Stephen Daldry's award-winning National Theatre production of J.B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls, touring from Alexandra Palace.
An Inspector Calls comes to Norwich Theatre Royal from Tuesday 1 February to Saturday 5 February 2028, as part of a UK and Ireland tour that opened at Alexandra Palace Theatre in September 2027. It's Stephen Daldry's National Theatre production of J.B. Priestley's play, which first opened in 1992 and has since played to more than six million people worldwide. The staging has picked up 19 major awards, including four Tonys and three Oliviers.
Priestley wrote the play at the end of the Second World War, though he set it before the first. It's a haunting thriller that centres on the prosperous Birling family, whose evening is interrupted when Inspector Goole arrives unexpectedly. His investigation into the death of a young woman reveals that the family all bear guilt for having exploited her for cheap labour, cheap sex and worse. Daldry, who also produced and directed The Crown and the London 2012 Olympic ceremonies, says the show's message remains as relevant today as ever.
Ian MacNeil's design is one of the most recognisable images in British theatre, with the Birling family home perched above a rain-soaked street. The production also features lighting by Rick Fisher and music by Stephen Warbeck.
