Interactive operatic mystery for Key Stage 2 students with live music from the Orchestra of Opera North, designed as an inspiring first encounter with opera for young people.
Opera North are bringing The Big Opera Mystery to the Newcastle Theatre Royal on Thursday 11 March, as part of a run that opens on 1 February and goes through to 2 April. It's billed as an 'opera for young people', and the whole thing is built around a whodunnit: the suspects are some of the greatest opera characters of all time, and the detective is the audience. The format is aimed at giving school children an inspiring first encounter with opera, so if you've got Key Stage 2s to sort out, this is the one to keep on your radar.
One of the best bits is that the music is played live by the Orchestra of Opera North, rather than coming from a recording. It's a full operatic extravaganza, not a stripped-back version, so the kids get the real thing right from the start. The mystery format lets them piece it together as they go, rather than just sitting back and watching.
It's part of Opera North's family-friendly offering across Newcastle and Gateshead, which runs alongside their full-scale operatic productions and pop-up performances. If you're already following what they're doing in the region, this fits right in with the rest of their season.

The show is at the Newcastle Theatre Royal, 100 Grey Street, NE1 6BR, and it runs from 1 February to 2 April, so you've got plenty of dates to choose from if you're booking for a school group. The 11 March performance is one of many across that window.
