Bill Bailey returns to the stage with a show celebrating the tradition of vaudeville, blending stand-up comedy with musical performance.
Bill Bailey is back on stage at the Utilita Arena on Saturday 5 December, with a show he's calling Vaudevillean. It's a bit of a return to form for him — he's calling himself a modern vaudevillian, and the whole thing is built around that old-school variety tradition. If you've seen him before, you know the drill: he's a comedian, a musician, and a bit of a collector of odd skills, and this show puts all of that in one place.
He's not just sticking to the stand-up side of things, either. He's a multi-instrumentalist who weaves music right into the set, and he describes himself as a multi-lingual purveyor of humour and musical prowess. The vaudeville connection is the thread that ties it together — that old-fashioned mix of comedy, song, and performance, delivered in his own particular way. It's less a traditional stand-up set and more of a variety show, with the music and the jokes running side by side rather than one following the other.
He's well known as a comedy legend and a national treasure, and he's also the man who took the Strictly Come Dancing crown, so there's a fair bit of ground he's covering here. The show is billed as enthralling family fun, built to divert and transport audiences away from the tribulations of daily life — a simple enough pitch, really. It's a night that doesn't ask much of you other than to sit back and enjoy the variety.
