If you're not familiar with the story, it's based on the Oscar-winning film of the same name, which itself came from Sister Helen Prejean's memoir. It follows a death row inmate in his final days, and it's described as one of the most widely acclaimed and frequently performed operas of the past 25 years. It's a heavy subject, but that's what it's built on.
Opera North is bringing it to Newcastle as part of a quartet of productions at the Theatre Royal, so it's not the only thing they've got on. Rigoletto, Eugene Onegin and Don Giovanni are the others, which means you can catch Dead Man Walking alongside three of the big classics. If you're into opera, that's four nights' worth of work in one season.
