The Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Marin Alsop with violinist Esther Yoo, plays Mahler's Symphony No. 6 and Bernstein's Serenade.
The Philharmonia Orchestra are playing Sage One on Friday 20 November, with Mahler's Symphony No. 6 as the main event. It's a big, late-Romantic work that takes up most of the evening, so it's the kind of thing that works best when you've got a full orchestra behind it rather than a chamber group.
Conducting is Marin Alsop, the Philharmonia's Principal Guest Conductor, and she's joined by violinist Esther Yoo. The programme pairs the Mahler with Bernstein's Serenade, which is a shorter, more focused piece for strings, so you get two quite different moods in one sitting: the broad, orchestral scale of the symphony and the tighter, string-led sound of the Serenade.
