A new stage adaptation of the BAFTA-winning BBC drama, set during the Thatcher years, exploring the lives of four Newcastle friends across three decades.
Our Friends in the North opens at Newcastle Theatre Royal on Thursday 15 October, running through to Saturday 24 October. It's a new stage adaptation of the BAFTA-winning BBC drama, and it's returning to the city where the story began.
The original series ran from 1979 to 1984 and followed four Newcastle friends across three decades of post-war Britain, tracking the rise of Thatcherism. This production, conceived by Live Theatre, focuses on a particular chapter: the years when Tosker, Geordie, Nicky and Mary come of age, and their friendships, ambitions and relationships are put to the test. It's described as funny, tender and fiercely political, and it arrives just as the series marks 30 years since it became a landmark of British drama.
Behind the scenes, the original writer Peter Flannery has adapted his own work for the stage, with Jack McNamara directing. The cast includes Ryan Nolan as Nicky, Scott Turnbull as Geordie, Jack Robertson as Tosker and Sam Neale as Mary. It's a strictly limited run, so there aren't many dates to choose from.
