New Adventures presents a revival of Matthew Bourne's Cinderella, a wartime romance set in London during the Second World War, as part of the production's 30th anniversary celebration.
Matthew Bourne's Cinderella comes to the Theatre Royal on Tuesday 20 April, running through to Saturday 1 May. It's a revival from New Adventures, brought back as part of the production's 30th anniversary celebration.
Bourne takes the classic fairytale and moves it to London during the Second World War. Cinderella meets a young RAF pilot and the two fall in love, only to be torn apart by the Blitz. It's a wartime romance rather than a magic slipper story, and New Adventures frames this revival as a testament to the indomitable spirit of wartime London. The whole thing is set to Prokofiev's score, with Lez Brotherston's Olivier Award-winning designs, lighting by Olivier Award winner Neil Austin, video and projection by Duncan McLean, and sound design by Paul Groothuis.
It's a production with some history behind it. It premiered at London's Piccadilly Theatre on 26 September 1997, made its US debut at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles on 30 March 1999, and won the Olivier for Outstanding Achievement in Dance in 1998. This run is part of the 30th anniversary, so it's returning nearly three decades after it first opened.
