Opera North production of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, sung in Russian with English subtitles, set in 1980s Russia.
Opera North bring Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin to the Theatre Royal on Saturday 7 November, their production of one of the composer's most popular operas. It's a co-production with Irish National Opera and Opera Queensland, sung in Russian with English subtitles, and performed with a live orchestra and chorus.
At its heart, Eugene Onegin is a coming-of-age story, and a heart-breaking one: a tale of love, regret and missed chances. It's known for its emotional depth, sweeping melodies and colourful orchestration. This particular staging re-imagines the story in 1980s Russia, where Tatyana, a tender young woman, falls hopelessly in love with the dashing, cynical Eugene Onegin, who casually rejects her. When they meet again years later, the consequences are devastating. Tchaikovsky adapted the opera from Pushkin's great verse novel, and this production presents it as a timeless classic given new life in a brand-new staging.
It's recommended for audiences 12 and over, as it contains some adult themes including death, grief and gun violence. The performance runs for 3 hours and 15 minutes, including an interval, so you'll want to settle in for the full evening.
