Dutty Moonshine Big Band live at Boiler Shop, blending electronic production, jazz, hip hop and big-band energy, with special guest Tankus.
Dutty Moonshine Big Band play Boiler Shop on Friday 16 October, part of their Second Distillation tour. They've been operating for over a decade, blending electronic production, live instrumentation, jazz, hip hop, bass music and big-band energy, and they've done it almost entirely outside the traditional music industry. What started as an experiment in 2015 has grown into sold-out headline tours, major festival appearances and two albums that charted in multiple UK charts.
The 'Moonshine' name refers to the parody worlds the band builds in song form, and the tour title draws on the moonshine process: the first distillation is raw and full of potential, while the second transforms it into something cleaner, stronger and more powerful. They describe Second Distillation as their most ambitious chapter yet, bringing upgraded live production, brand new music and bigger headline venues. It's a night that pulls from their whole range — the electronic side, the jazz and hip hop, and the big-band energy that's always been there.
Opening for them is Tankus (formerly Tankus the Henge), who's shared stages with the band for fifteen years. They describe their own work as a deeply theatrical endeavour akin to Tom Waits or The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, but with a modern twist. Between the two, you've got a theatrical opener and a headline set that brings together a lot of different sounds under one roof.
