The musical Chicago returns to Newcastle Theatre Royal, set in the decadence of the 1920s.
Chicago returns to the Theatre Royal for a run from Monday 29 March to Saturday 3 April 2027, playing on the Main Stage. It's part of a 2027 tour visiting 33 venues between 5 February and 27 November, so this is the Newcastle stop of a much larger run.
Set in the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, the story follows Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover and then hires Chicago's slickest criminal lawyer to turn the crime into a barrage of sensational headlines. It's described as 'blues behind bars' from the writers of Cabaret, where justice is on trial for the husband-killing bad girls of shady Chicago, and a chorus girl forms an unusual nightclub act with another murderess. The show was created by John Kander, Fred Ebb and choreographer Bob Fosse, and has picked up six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and a Grammy along the way. The Daily Telegraph called it 'SUPERB'.
