A community festival of local sustainability initiatives, artists, workshops and market stalls, with lakeside yoga, talks and demonstrations.
The Living Smart Festival returns to Speers Point Park on Saturday 19 September, running from 9am to 3pm. Now in its 15th year, it's one of the region's biggest sustainability events, built around the idea of giving you practical tips to take home to your house, garden and community, and encouraging us to think globally and act locally. Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz has backed the day, saying that everyday sustainable choices can make a big difference.
Headlining this year is Beau Miles, a YouTube storyteller, author and self-described 'odd, offbeat and authentic' adventurer who's built an international following through unconventional projects — like turning discarded materials into paddles, desks and chicken coops. His keynote draws on the belief that modest, everyday actions can say something important about how people care for their surroundings. He's joined on the bill by Junkyard Beats and the King and Queen of Green.
Beyond the stage, there's plenty to get stuck into throughout the day. You'll find lakeside yoga, a Welcome to Country, talks, workshops, demonstrations and market stalls. There's a School Garden Bed Competition and a native-plant giveaway, so if you've been meaning to get something growing at home, this is a good time to pick up a plant. To make getting there easier, there are free shuttle buses running and an all-day free bike-valet service.
