A two-day festival blending Awabakal and Worimi culture with Indian traditions, featuring food, storytelling, markets, dance and yoga.
The Coastal Cultures Festival: Indian × First Nations takes over Newcastle Foreshore Park this weekend, Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October. It's a two-day festival that brings together Awabakal and Worimi cultural leaders with Indian traditions, set right along the water. The whole thing is built around that crossing — First Nations culture and Indian heritage sitting side by side on the same stretch of coast.
Saturday kicks off with a First Nations Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, followed by an Indian lamp-lighting ritual. From there, the day opens up into coastal storytelling, a Fusion Food Village, and collaborative dance performances. The music side gets a recorded moment too, with a filmed DJ NYK 'Destination Newcastle' set. If you're just in for the food, the Fusion Food Village is the place to be on the first day.
Sunday shifts the energy. It starts early with a Sunrise on Country yoga session, and the Fusion Food Village from Saturday becomes a Fusion Brunch Village. The big addition is the Coastline Collective Market, a fair of local artisans with a Purnima Sari × First Nations design collaboration as one of the highlights. The weekend wraps up with a coastal closing ceremony and a community gathering.

The festival is staged at Newcastle Foreshore Park, 32 Wharf Rd, Newcastle East, NSW 2300, and it's designed as a family-friendly weekend that brings together local businesses, artists, and tourism operators. There's a carpark on site and public toilets, so you've got the basics covered for a full day out. If you're planning to spend both days there, Saturday is your food and dance day, and Sunday is for the sunrise yoga, the brunch village, and the market.
