Guided backstage tours of the Civic Theatre Newcastle, exploring its history, architecture and performance spaces.
Civic Theatre is opening its doors for a Behind the Curtain Backstage Tour on Monday 28 September. It's a chance to get past the front of house and into the parts of the theatre that usually stay hidden from the audience, and it's led by the theatre's own Team Leaders, so you're being shown around by people who actually work the place.
The tour takes you through the backstage corridors, the technical areas and the performance spaces, and along the way they'll share stories about the venue's past, its architecture and the many productions that have played its stage over the decades. It's one of New South Wales' most iconic performing arts venues and a cornerstone of Newcastle's arts scene, so there's a fair bit of history to draw on.
What you'll see is the side of the theatre that doesn't make it into the programme: the technical equipment, the stage management, and the performer preparation areas. It's the operational side of things that happens away from public view, and the tour is pitched for all ages, as well as students and aspiring performers.
