A writing club for children aged 5 to 15 to build writing skills and become part of a creative community, part of the Atlas initiative.
Atlas Young Writers Club is running at Newcastle City Library on Wednesdays this winter, with sessions on 22 July, 12 August, 2 September and 16 September. It's for kids aged 5 to 15, and each one runs from 4pm to 5pm.
The club is part of Atlas, a State Library of NSW initiative that brings children together for hands-on sessions with experienced professionals. It sits alongside an Art Club and a Book Lovers Club, and each one pairs library staff and other young people with a professional facilitator. There's also a broader connection: members link up with Atlas Club participants across the state via Zoom, so the group here in Newcastle is part of a much larger network of kids working on their craft.
The writing strand is about sparking imagination and helping children bring their writing to life, with the library's own collections as a source of inspiration. The goal is to build skills while becoming part of a creative community. It's a free, friendly environment, but bookings are essential. If your child is 12 or under, you'll need to stay in the library with them, and for anyone under 16, you'll need to provide contact details when you book. The program is supported by the John B Foundation.
