Day of two screenings with introductions and film discussions, 'Cabaret' (1972) and 'I Dream in Another Language' (2017), presented by The Gaily Show at the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
The Gaily Show is coming to the Minneapolis Institute of Art on Sunday, November 1, as part of the Mia Film Festival. The whole thing runs from 10:45 AM to 4:45 PM in the Pillsbury Auditorium, so it's a full day of cinema rather than a single screening. John Parker and Jim Pounds, the duo behind The Gaily Show and This Queer Book Saved My Life, are presenting it, and the lectures throughout the day are sponsored by the Mark and Mary Goff Fiterman Lecture Fund.
The program pairs two screenings, each with its own introduction and a discussion to follow. The first is Cabaret (1972), set in Berlin in 1931 against the rise of the Nazi party and the collapse of the Weimar Republic. The second is I Dream in Another Language (2017), about a linguist who arrives in a small jungle settlement to record the last speakers of the Zikril language. Between the two, you've got the introductions and the discussions, so the films aren't just playing back-to-back—there's space to talk through them before and after.
