Grand opening and Video Store Day celebration with a sidewalk sale at Saturn Video, a nonprofit movie rental store returning to Minneapolis.
Saturn Video opens its doors in the Seward neighborhood of Minneapolis on Saturday, October 17, and it's timing the grand opening with Video Store Day. There's a sidewalk sale to mark the occasion, and it's the first permanent video rental storefront the Twin Cities have had since Video Universe in Robbinsdale closed in 2023. The store is a nonprofit run by owner Sierra Parham, who's been collecting VHS and DVD for about 16 years. She first found foreign cinema through the Step Up program in Minneapolis, where she interned at Intermediate Arts, and grew up with VHS and Blockbuster. She runs the shop with a mission to bring back the tactile experience of physical media, with a focus on works by women, LGBTQ+ and BIPOC filmmakers alongside mainstream studio films. The storefront comes after three years of pop-ups at local markets and theaters, and the collection is already over 1,000 titles and growing.
If you're looking for a regular way to rent, there's a $10-a-month membership that lets you have one video at a time with unlimited swaps, and there's a lower-income/student tier for that. If you'd rather just grab a single title, individual rentals are available for a few dollars. The grand opening is Saturday, October 17, in Seward, and the sidewalk sale is part of the Video Store Day celebration.
