Rachel Ries brings her Her Crooked Heart project to Icehouse with her 'Live at Hive' EP and new songs, opening with Alec Watson.
Rachel Ries is back at Icehouse on Thursday, December 3, as part of her Her Crooked Heart residency. The night is built around two different eras of the same project: the live album Live at Hive, which finally came out this year, and a collection of new songs that won't be on record until next year.
Live at Hive is a bit of a time capsule. Back in December 2019, Ries and her Her Crooked Heart band recorded five songs live at Brian Joseph's studio, Hive. The pandemic held the recording until now, so these are songs from a band she calls an "absolute dream band" from 2018 to 2020, finally getting their release. The residency also draws on new work she's written with Alec Watson, Liz Draper, Toby Ramaswamy and Hilary James, produced by Mike Noyce and Dexter Wolfe. Since the record isn't due until next year, this is one of the first chances to hear those songs live.
Joining her on stage are Siri Undlin (humbird), Hilary James (bathtub cig), Adelyn Strei and Hannah Hebl (Hemma). It's a full ensemble for the night, which fits the choral-arranging side of Ries' work—she's the voice behind Her Crooked Heart and the mind behind Kith + Kin Chorus. She's released several records and toured around the world, but she describes herself as someone who mostly enjoys being an auntie, thinking in eight-part harmony and honing her Portuguese egg tart baking skills.
