First show of the new garage band Saint Grandma's Garage, led by Rachel Ries, at Icehouse Minneapolis.
Rachel Ries brings a brand-new band to Icehouse on Sunday, November 15, for the first-ever show of Saint Grandma's Garage. It's the start of a residency, so this is the first time the group will be playing out in public. The lineup around her is a gathering of local friends: Jeremy Messersmith, Hilary James, JE Sunde, Sadie Gustafson-Zook, and The Starfolk.
The band's origin story is as low-stakes as its name suggests. It formed when Jeremy Messersmith came over to pick sour cherries and, between sticky fingers and toweling off, suggested gathering friends to play in his garage before the weather turned. The name comes from the garage itself, which he says looks as if it were designed by a feisty grandmother in 1972. They play as a seasonal band that swaps instruments, and this is their first show.
Rachel Ries is the voice behind Her Crooked Heart and the choral arranging mastermind behind Kith + Kin Chorus, the community choir she founded nine years ago. She's released many records and toured around the world, but she's just as likely to talk about her life outside the studio. She built a tiny home on wheels and, by her own account, mostly enjoys being an auntie, thinking in eight-part harmony, solving construction conundrums, and honing her Portuguese egg tart baking skills.
